Those properties are listed in phone directories under the name Roger Tee Enterprises Inc. "He'll be upset," Williams said.Ī former singer with the band, Larry Troutman had served as president of Troutman Enterprises Inc., whose interests included contracting, real-estate management and the three recording studios and a rehearsal space in the buildings near where Roger was shot. Bonner taught Roger Troutman how to play guitar, he said. Williams said he was trying to contact Leroy "Sugarfoot" Bonner, guitarist for the Ohio Players. He wept as he remembered the Troutmans, who he said he had known for more than two decades. One onlooker at the scene on Harvard was Williams. Detectives planned to interview family members on whether there were problems in the family or the business. Witnesses weren't able to say anything about the dispute. "We don't know what this is about," White said. He appeared to have shot himself in the head. Officers found Larry Troutman in the driver's seat of a black Lincoln. Minutes later, dispatchers got a call about a car hitting a tree on the 2100 block of Harvard Boulevard, White said. Witnesses told police the gunman had left in a black car. The synth-based sound also served Troutman well on the mid-'80s solo hit "In the Mix" and Zapp's ballad "Computer Love." As the Zapp never did regain its commercial footing by the late '80s, Roger fared better solo and turned in the romantic ballad and surprise hit "I Wanna Be Your Man." All The Great Hits diminishes its appeal by adding disposable tracks like "Curiosity '93 (Remix)" and the live "Midnight Hour-Live '93 (Remix)." While the hits are indeed here, a fan could just as easily obtain a 1980-84 album of Zapp or Roger to get a better sense of the importance of the music.ĭick Smith, Background Vocals - Michael Warren, Band Member, Horn - Larry Troutman, Band Member, Percussion, Writer, Congas - Phil Brown, Masterer - ROGER TROUTMAN, Producer, Mixer, Band Member, Guitar, Keyboards, Writer, Fender Rhodes Piano, Background Vocals, Remix, Synthesiser, Vibes - Lester Troutman, Band Member, Drums, Engineer, Remix - RAY DAVIS, Background Vocals - Zapp Troutman, Producer, Mixer, Band Member, Keyboards, Fender Rhodes Piano, Background Vocals, Remix, Bass, Synthesiser - John Jaszcz, Engineer - Gregory Jackson, Band Member, Keyboards, Lead Vocals, Fender Rhodes Piano, Background Vocals, Synthesiser - Jannetta Boyce, Band Member, Background Vocals - Sherman Fleetwood, Band Member - Zapp, MainArtist - Bobby Glover, Band Member, Lead Vocals, Background Vocals - Delores Smith, Background Vocals - Marchelle Smith, Background Vocals - Carl Cowan, Horn - Eddie Barber, Band Member, Horn - Greg McNeilly, Engineer - Greg Reilly, Engineer - Jerome Derrickson, Band Member, Horn - Ken Bowen, Engineer - Mallia Franklin, Background Vocals - Randy Wallace, Horn - Robin Jenney, Engineer Zapp's 1983 near-classic "Heartbreaker 1 and 2" still amazes with its minimal, lean sound. Tracks from Roger Troutman's solo debut, like the great "Do It Roger" and a cover of "Heard It Through the Grapevine," seemed to sap the strength from the Zapp name, although the band was on them too. Zapp's first hit, "More Bounce to the Ounce" with it's hard-hitting funk with jazzy underpinnings, set the template. ![]() While both Zapp and Roger had enough hits to make separate greatest hits compilations, All the Greatest Hits works well due to the song inclusions and the level of skill. Zapp, unlike the other P-Funk units, had their own personality divorced from George Clinton, so much so a listener might not get the connection unless they read the album notes. This Dayton, OH, band came to typify swinging, effervescent, and melodic funk in an era when Parliament, Funkadelic, and other outfits were getting bogged down and burned out.
